The Annual Toys for Tots Golf Tournament was again a big success thanks to Chairman Todd Ricci. It seems that Gary Crolla and his sons (who carried the team) were able to pull out (read-steal) the victory. The team of Pat Hayden and the Pony was at the other end of the spectrum and won prizes just as good. A good time was had by everyone and the weather was spectacular! Thanks to all of the volunteers who kept us refreshed and did an excellent job on the par threes. Some minor adjustment will make this one of the leading tournaments in the area.

Recent Events:

On March 19 the Literacy Center of Milford again sponsored the "Leprechaun Leap" into the cold waters of Long Island Sound at Walnut Beach. This has become one of their annual fund raisers. This year participants included Scott Tummins, Lou LaVecchia and Stella LaVecchia. Need I say more, they must have been out of their minds, but it was for an excellent cause. I observed the action from my warm living room.

Interesting outcome on the Men's Basketball pool sponsored by Station 6. It seems the members of Engine 6 were cleaning up on the early rounds, but it took a late push by Station 1 to beat out Engine 3 in the finals. Funny I never heard "Drinks for everyone" from the eventual winner.

The Children's Easter Egg Hunt at Station 7 was a big hit with the members children. Check out the picture section on the web pace for photos from the party.

The New York City Five Borough Bike Race was held on May 7 with Brad Ross, Carlos Rios, Scott Tummins, Paul Geer and Carlos Smith participating. Carlos was able to work out the transportation details and I understand Brad picked out a five star Chinese restaurant to dine at. Kudos to the riders for completing this grueling "Tour de New York"

As usual, Mike Blaise won first place for his float in the St. Patrick's Day parade. Each year Mike builds the float for all of the members children to ride on during the parade. He has an undefeated record of winning the first place trophy every year it has been entered. Thanks Mike and all the Leprechauns that help in the construction.

This year was also the largest contingent of Uniformed members marching in the Parade that featured beautiful weather and the New Haven County Emerald Society Pipes and Drums providing the music. Next year we would like to see more Retirees join us and even more of the active members "strolling"

The April 7 "Smoker" to raise funds for the Softball team to travel to Maryland to play in the IAFF/MDA tournament was just barely a success (they covered expenses). Please support them in any future fund raisers they may sponsor.

Station 6 had a recent emergency at their quarters as you can see by the photo below

Its reported the first notification was when the operator rang the doorbell to report his accident! Actually no one was hurt and there was only minimal damage to Engine 6.

The Sick Benefit Memorial service was held on June 3 at Station 7. Due to the heavy rain it was forced to moved inside the firehouse. It was a good time to show off the newly refinished apparatus floor. The turnout was a bit lower than previous years due to the weather, but still 85 people showed up to honor our deceased members.

Upcoming events:

The Second Annual Thimble Island Sunset/Booze Cruise has been scheduled for August 2 from 6:00 to 10:00 PM. Last year a wonderful time was had by all that attended. This year it is expected to fill very quickly and there is limited space. To make your reservation and place a deposit, contact Jason Dombrowski or Brad Ross as soon as possible. The B/C shifts are off duty.

The test for Assistant Superintendent of Apparatus will be held on June 22 at a time and place to be announced. Good luck to all the members competing for this position. Jim Connelly has been doing a fine job as the actor, but Larry needs the help desperately.

Remember Safety Stand Down Day is coming at the end of June. This is a joint venture of the IAFF and IAFC to help promote workplace safety and to help us lower the line of duty death rates. This year's emphasis is on apparatus/vehicle safety especially on responding to alarms.

The new Engine 7 has been delivered to the dealership in North Haven and is optimistically expected to be in service by July 1.

The new car for Chief LaVecchia has arrived and is in the shop waiting for lights and radios. This will cause the trickle down effect with Andy Vargo getting the old Crown Vic and his car replacing the pool car that was totaled in a recent accident.

Union news:

Thanks to the Union Officers for inviting two exceptional speakers to the last monthly meeting. They kept those in attendance glued to their seats for the entire presentation. Thanks guys, we owe you one.

The new Union Web Site is up and running (www.Local944.com) and is beautiful. It is chock full of news and information. Make sure you check it often for updated information. Some of the recent information on the site included that by default, the Chief has approved half day vacations for the second half of the night by approving a request from Mike Hudd. Another piece of information is that Retiree Jon Luysterboroughs put in a request to the Pension Office to have his new wife as the beneficiary of his pension and the request was accepted. Also the City has hired an outside contractor to monitor sick leave. The Executive Board reports that if you are contacted by this vendor, do not release any information to them and report the request to a Union Officer.

In order to utilized the page to it's fullest, you must register your name and password. Portions of this site are intended for the private use of active and retired members of Local 944 so please do not give out any passwords. Please fill out all information. Note: Membership # is your employee number.  Any questions contact the secretary of the union at local944@sbcglobal.net or mdunnmfd@.snet.net.

Along with the hand truck owned by the Sick Benefit Association that is kept at Station 1, I have obtained a portable cement mixer with an electric motor that is available for anyone's use. I will be moving it shortly to Station 2 for storage, in the meantime, if you need it call me and I will drop it off.

The ice machine at Station 1 is now up and running thanks to the Station 1 Coffee Fund with contributions from all of the other Stations. The ice is free to any member of a Coffee Fund and Retirees. It is located in the Tower Bay. Bring your own cooler or ice chest and stock up for that summer party or picnic. Please call ahead though for peak times such as Fourth of July, Oyster Festival and Labor Day to make sure there is enough to go around.

Also don't forget if you need the Union tables and chairs, you must make an advance reservation through the Union Office (874-6998) otherwise its first come first serve.

If you have not completed your survey, please do so as soon as possible and either mail it in or drop it off in the box at Station 1 or 7.

The testing procedure for the new recruits is winding down and should be completed shortly. This has been the topic of discussion at every firehouse and every kitchen table since it started and has not let up. Hopefully when the process is finished, the members will welcome those that are appointed and we can only hope that they are up to the standards that have been the tradition of the Milford Fire Department for over twenty years. We have always been better than "average" and "pass/fail."

Union Officers from back in the day. Thank theses guys for the contract you enjoy today. Grand prize to the winner who can name those pictured (two bags of ice).

Special thanks to Steve Racz for providing a lot of old stories and photos for this newsletter. We appreciate your archives Steve.

The next Union Meeting will be June 20 at 5:30 at Station 2. This will be the last meeting before the summer and the Dinosaurs will be putting on their annual picnic supper.

The next Retirees Association meeting will be June 28 at 2:00 at Station 2. This will be their last meeting before the summer.

The next Dinosaurs meeting will be June 27 at 6:30 at Station 2.

Sports:

The Connecticut Sun in the WNBA are of to a hot start standing at 5-1 and in first place in the Eastern Conference.

Its interesting to see the Carolina Hurricanes in the Stanley Cup Finals of the NHL. Why couldn't they play that well when they were the Hartford Whalers?

I'm sure I don't have to remind everyone who is in first place in the National League East? Why its the New York Mets of course! The same Mets who took two out of three from the Yankees recently. See you in October when we are hoisting the World Series trophy. The Yankees, who just happened to slip into first place by a half game over the Red Sox are done. Put a fork in them. When you have to resort to putting Bernie Williams in every position in the outfield because that's all you have, you might as well hang up your spikes. Mets over Detroit in five games for the World Championship in October.

Stay tuned for Flashover's and Special Notices between Feederline's. Good luck "G" make us proud. Enjoy the Summer and........

BE SAFE!

Bill
