To the family of Ann Porter (Bob Porter's widow) who passed away on January 18, 2006.

To John Slyman whose Brother passed away suddenly on March 2 in New York.

My apologies to Larry Mitchell, I incorrectly reported that his wife passed away from cancer. She died due to  respiratory problems that she had fought for a number of years.

John Gustafson's widow Liz would like to express her gratitude to all of the members who paid their respect to John at both his wake and funeral services.

To Commissioner Healy's family on the death of his Sister in Law, Janice Healy the former Secretary of the Board of Fire Commissioners.

The Local would also like to express our condolences to the family of Art Luf, the retired Bridgeport Firefighter who founded the Connecticut Burns Care Association which provides assistance to Bridgeport Hospital Burn Unit and runs the Connecticut Burn Camp for children every summer.

Wives Department:

Congratulations to Mike and Tracy Donegan on the birth of their first child, a girl, on February 20.

To Grandpa Bill Pruett on the birth of a grandson on March 2 by his daughter Audrey in Florida.

A tip of the helmet to Carlos Rios' wife Kelly who ran in the Disney Marathon at Walt Disney World in Florida on January 6. In finishing in 5 hours and 3 minutes with her sponsorships, she raised $3,000 for the Leukemia Fund. You go girl!

Scott and Cindy Tummins were married on New Years Eve in Newport, Rhode Island. It was a beautiful ceremony made even nicer with the snow falling on the waterfront. All reports that I have received are that everyone behaved (except Gil and Steve, hmm) and that Tim has only vague remembrances of the evening. You can check out their wedding photographs at;
http://www.kiernanphotography.com/ select 2006 wedding slide shows and then click on Cindy and Scott.

The Children's Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by the Local will be Saturday April 1 (rain date April 2). It will be held at Station 7. Anyone interested in helping out should contact Christine Heenan at Heenan4@SBCGlobal.net You must RSVP by March 18 with your name and number of children attending. You may do so at the above email address or by calling Christine at home. Everyone is reminded to bring their cameras. Hopefully I can publish some pictures in the next Feederline. Got that ladies?, I know you will come through for me.

Upcoming events:

Milford's Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade will be held on Saturday March 11 at 1:00 PM. All Active and Retired members are invited to march/stroll as a group. The uniform of the day will be Dress Blues. Any retirees not having a uniform is requested to wear their Retired badge.

The Honor Guard is looking for new members. Bill Holveck reports that they will be having a meeting at his garage on Tuesday March 7 on West River St. Anyone wishing to join the Honor Guard is asked to attend. The usual entry fee is expected. The Honor Guard will be leading our delegation along with the Emerald Society Pipes and Drums at the St. Patrick's Parade.

The Local 944 All Charities Golf Tournament will be held on Thursday May 18 at 12:00 PM at the Grassy Hill Country Club in Orange. It will be a Shot Gun start and participants will be provided with a lunch, hand outs and a full course meal afterwards. This event fills quickly so mark your calender and make your reservations as soon as the entry forms become available. The cost is still a paltry $130 per golfer. And questions, contact Todd Ricci or Jim Coubrough.

The test for Assistant Superintendent of Apparatus will be soon. The sign up sheets have been turned in and those that are interested have been studying for some time. Good luck to all of the applicants.

The entry test for Firefighter will be held this Spring. The application period is open from March 3 to March 17. See Christine in the Chief's office for an application. Members have been out recruiting in the area, and interest seems high.

In the next week or so a delegation will be traveling to lovely Snyder, Nebraska to do the pre paint inspection on the new Engine 7. This truck is a bit ahead of schedule and the way things are going it will not be here soon enough.

The new Chief's car has also been ordered and delivery is expected in the Spring. This too is needed due to the accident with one of the Inspectors cars which totaled that car and the "school" car being so old and run down it is no longer feasible to put additional funds into it to keep it running.

Local 944 news:

It was voted at the last union meeting to extend the trial period for the starting times for the monthly meetings for two more moths, therefore the March and April meetings will start at 5:30 at Station 2.

The Questionnaire Committee is completing their final draft to be submitted to the membership very soon for comment. It is requested that the members complete them honestly and sensibly so that a true exchange of ideas can be accomplished between the Union and the Administration.

All Stations are requested to submit a name to the Executive Board for a "Station Contact" person to be a liaison between the Union Officers and the members in the individual stations. With the abolishment of the Station Steward positions, this is need to keep the information flowing between both parties. The duties would be to post notices and be the first branch in a phone tree in case immediate notification had to be made. This is a very important job in our Union. If you have any questions about this please contact the President or the Secretary.

Sick Benefit Association:

The Annual Sick Benefit Memorial Service will be June 3 at the Station 7 Memorial. Please set this date aside to honor our deceased Brothers. The Service will be 8:00 AM with the breakfast to follow. Information will be sent out at a later date. Please keep in mind to reduce costs, all notices and replies will be done electronically or by telephone only. Post cards will not be included in future mailings.

Coffee Fund:

The Station 1 Coffee Fund has purchased a used ice maker and is having it installed in the Tower Bay. The outside stations have been asked to contribute to this endeavor so that ALL members will be able to use it whenever they want and so that we will always have ice available for the Dinosaurs to bring to emergency scenes without having to obtain it from area restaurants. Please see to it that your station makes its contribution as soon as possible.

Local 4260:

The Dispatcher Local has their new web site up and running and it looks great. The web address is: www.local4260.com Check it out it has lots of valuable information on our Emergency Operation Center. It is so much better that the Fire Department section on the City of Milford web site which is a joke. It is also more concise than the 911 section on the Police site.

Local 4260 is also still waiting for their contract to be settled. It is hoped that they soon will be among the fold as they have been without a current working agreement for over nine months now. Good luck Brothers and Sisters.

This and That:

As a side note, the Local 944 new web site should also be up and running shortly. It has been designed to be more up to date and interactive than the present site which has fallen into disrepair.

Between Local 4260, Local 944 and the Police Union web site people can obtain more information about their emergency services than anywhere else.

Thank you to all of the members who responded to my recent update of the email list. Some have been deleted and others added and updated. Thanks again, it went quickly and smoothly this year.

Retirees Corner:

Thanks to Bobby Haight for supplying the following photos. If anyone has any pictures they would like to submit, contact myself or Mike Dunn. We will scan them and return them to you right away. These don't necessarily have to be old ones, newer ones are just as good. The Local is keeping a record of any that are submitted on Compact Disks. The Dinosaurs are also the keeper of any old pictures, files or records at Station 2, so if you wish to clean out your attic, they will be kept safe at Station 2.

Lieut. Tom Sweeney, Jim Richards, Bob Haight, Red Swanson, Ernie Chevett and Joe Bain after giving blood at a Red Cross Blood Drive.

The next Union meeting will be March 21 at Station 2 at 5:30

The next Dinosaurs meeting will be March 28 at Station 2 at 6:30

The next Police and Fire Retirees Association meeting will be March 29 at Station 2 at 2:00 PM.

Sports:

The Local Softball team has had an organizational meeting and are planning a "Smoker" to help raise funds for their trip to Maryland for the IAFF/MDA Tournament. I will have more information on this "event" soon.

The Local Basketball team continues to play hard, if only they can keep their players from getting hurt during warm ups.

AH, BASEBALL! Spring training has started and the Yankees are already making excuses that Carl Pavano will not be ready and they have brought Mel  back to help out with the pitchers. Johnny Damon is due for a bad year and Bernie Williams is his back up? Give it up now. My Mets will be there in the Fall with their revamped powerhouse line up and superb pitching staff. As far as the Red Sox, all I can say is Fenway Park is a fun place to watch a game.

March Madness is here and the UCONN Men and Women are expected to go deep into the tournament if not winning the whole thing again. I'll be in Boston to root for the girls while the men wrap it up in Indy. Go Huskies!

Until next time, BE SAFE!

Bill
