17 November 2015

President Michael Dunn called the November monthly meeting to order 1730 hrs.

Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

The previous month's meeting minutes were read and accepted -Wes, 2nd- Biroscak , unanimous.

Officers and Committees:

Grievance Committee: None

Safety Committee: Bailouts started back up (?) Carman teaching trainers.

United Way: No members stepped up to take it over. Might get slips with checks & return them to BC Wassmer.

MDA: Ended up with ~$6100 after three collections. Beat our goal by about $1000, averaged $1500-2000 each day. Looking for second person to help Stacoffe.

Pension: End of Oct ~$325million (up from ~$311million in Sept). Mantie & Bob Staurovsky pensioned last meeting. Lucky & Murph met with Pension people at Parson's- Lynn & Lauren, went well. i.e. Terminal leave gets calculated a week or two after last pay period. If you leave in June, leave early- later will carry terminal leave to July & next fiscal year. Any questions please talk to Lucky, Murph and/or Lynn at pension office. Even if you're years away, it doesn't hurt to plan ahead.

Awards Ceremony: Email from city requesting for awards

Bylaws:

T-Shirt World:

Worker's Comp:

Social Committee: Picnic had about 19 members turn up, 6 retirees, + kids about 50. Cost about $2000. Stacoffe not doing it again if  anyone else wants to take over or try something else.

Toys for Tots: 16-18, giveaway on 19th. All hands 17-19th to help out, brings friends/family to help if they want- any help is appreciated.

Retirement Diner: December 4th, Mantie, Ike, Healey. 115 people so far. Pay due yesterday. Need dinner selections & money. Prepare for something very different this year. Beer garden and bigger bar now. Sober shuttle will be running again.

Santa on the Green: Friday after Thanksgiving.

Kids Holiday Party: Hilliard running it. Says it's his last year. Sign-up sheets will be going up.

President's Report: Discussion to wash hoods on Sunday. Complaint made as to training. Determined it was not training but asked to come to HQ since other departments washers were OOS. Letter out from city to wash them on Sundays, so we will be doing it. If your machine is broken bring them to HQ and hang out/have a cup of coffee while they wash- no training. Safety issue comes from research regarding carcinogens from calls, brought in as precaution against cancer. Issues cleared up and Union is in agreement with department to continue Sunday hood washing.

Day staff BCs and Captains will get 4/10 hour day shifts as benefit to those positions- starting next bid/shift. Board discussed it with Chiefs and all in agreement that it will benefit union members who end up in those positions without compromising workloads. Some talk on the floor that we should have got 24s with it, but there is a lot more involved with 24s that require more negotiations. Consensus on the floor is a lot of people don't want to give anything up for 24s. Reality is some changes will have to come with 24s, possibly in regards to vacation/swap time, bereavement, training, sick time, overtime, etc. Chiefs already discussing changes to swap and sick time due to abuse of schedules- coming from Board of Commissioners. Currently the Union has a better fight for sick time, but swap time has almost doubled since last time membership was told to tone it down. Most of the complaints have been from BCs complaints about never knowing who's on shift, or lack of continuity. Different theories on how to solve it and whether/how to limit it.

Medic 2 rooms in progress at HQ.

Mechanics test tomorrow at Margaret Egan Center- be there at 6, starts at 630

Please notify Captain or BC if you're going to be working on your cars in the bay, or if anything in your station is broken.
